Day 11: The Resurrection and the Life — John 11:25-26

Reflection: John 11 records one of the most powerful signs in the ministry of Jesus: the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha and a close friend of Jesus, becomes seriously ill and dies. By the time Jesus arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has already been in the tomb for four days. This moment presents an apparent crisis. If Jesus truly is the Messiah, why did He allow His friend to die? Yet Jesus reveals that this event has a greater purpose: “This sickness will not end in death. It is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” When Jesus meets Martha, she expresses both grief and faith. She believes that if Jesus had been present, Lazarus would not have died. In response, Jesus makes one of the most profound declarations in the Gospel: “I am the resurrection and the life.” This statement goes far beyond promising resurrection in the future. Jesus declares that resurrection and life are found in His very person. He does not merely perform resurrection; He embodies it. The promise that follows is remarkable: those who believe in Him will live even though they die. Physical death does not have the final word for those who trust in Christ. Jesus then demonstrates His authority over death. Standing before the tomb, He calls Lazarus by name, and the man who had been dead walks out alive. This miracle reveals Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God with power over death itself. It is a sign pointing to an even greater reality, the resurrection of Christ that will soon follow. John records this event so readers may believe. If Jesus has authority over death, then trusting Him brings the ultimate gift: eternal life. Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. Strengthen my faith in You and remind me that those who believe in You will live forever. Action Point: Encourage someone today with the hope of eternal life that is found in Christ.
