Day 5: The Son Who Gives Life — John 5:24
Reflection: John 5 describes a dramatic miracle and an even more dramatic theological claim. Jesus heals a man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years. The healing itself is extraordinary, but the controversy that follows reveals something even greater about the identity of Christ.
The miracle takes place on the Sabbath, and the religious leaders immediately criticize Jesus for violating their interpretation of Sabbath law. Instead of defending Himself in ordinary terms, Jesus makes a statement that shocks them: “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”
By calling God His Father in this unique sense, Jesus claims equality with God. The religious leaders understand exactly what He is saying, which is why they accuse Him of blasphemy.
Jesus then explains the relationship between the Father and the Son. The Father loves the Son and entrusts His works to Him. Just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it.
This claim directly supports the purpose of John’s Gospel. Jesus is not merely a messenger from God; He is the Son of God who possesses divine authority over life and judgment.
The most powerful statement appears in verse 24. Jesus declares that those who hear His word and believe in the One who sent Him already possess eternal life. They have crossed from death to life.
Notice the certainty of this promise. Eternal life is not merely a future hope but a present reality for those who believe in Christ. Spiritual death is replaced by spiritual life the moment a person places their faith in the Son of God.
Jesus also speaks of a future resurrection when all who are in their graves will hear His voice. This means that Christ’s authority extends beyond spiritual life into physical resurrection. The Messiah has power over both the present and the future.
John includes this story to demonstrate that belief in Jesus is not misplaced faith. The Son possesses divine authority, divine power, and divine life. Trusting Him is the only way to move from death to life.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that through Your word I have passed from death to life. Strengthen my faith in You and help me live each day in the assurance of the eternal life You give.
Action Point: Meditate on John 5:24 today and thank God for the gift of eternal life through Christ.
